This is Cardi, so named because his sweater was a cardigan. I had two very soft but sadly moth-eaten sweaters from J.Crew that really wanted to be made into a little doll for my nephew. He was a gift in Christmas '08. He is quite dear. These are some cloth bags made from remnants: red one was the batik shirt for Aud, middle bag was Lila's diaper bag fabric, other one was pockets from the blue & brown diaper bag.
The mei tai in use! It came on a hike earlier this year and was alternately used by Manny who found it so comfortable he fell asleep, and 4 year old Audrey who rode in a back carry for a while.
Pile of little bags to sell at the farm stand. Most have been bought already.

Fall Collection Preview

Given the problems that this fabric and pattern have given me so far, I am not sure if it will actually be done in time for the start of nursery school, but we can hope. Here is a list of the snafus so far:

Zipper needed to be sewn in at least 3 times. My stitch ripper is getting dull. I finally basted it and then sewed, but I still don't like it.
Cut the back on the fold, and started to cut the front not on the fold and then realized it was wrong. But figured it would be ok to keep the back cut on the fold, until I realized that would mean it was 1 1/4 inches too big which matters because of the hood. So now I have to take the back in by 1 1/4 inches.
Had to sew the shoulder seams about 3 times each because the fabric kept stretching. I think I need to switch to my roller foot and baste the seams.

But I love the fabric and I think it will get easier, so I'm going to keep plugging away. Burda patterns always are a little tricky in the beginning.

Jungle Love

These are for (in order) my nephew, 6 mos., my niece, 3.5 years, and her brother, 6 mos. I thought they should have matching outfits for the 4th of July.

This was the first thing I've sewn in quite a while. And probably not the best thing to start with because it took me almost all day, even though I've sewn it a few times in the past. It has a lot of steps, and the snaps took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to put them on, but I am very happy with how it turned out.

I'm really hoping this dress fits. I only had a pattern for a 12 month old, and the 12 month old is now 3 and a half, so I did my best to adjust the pattern but am fully prepared to add some side panels or extend the straps if necessary.

Small shorts. I really do not like trying to make a tiny narrow hem in a tiny leg opening, so I devised these cuffs to incorporate the strips and avoid the whole hemming issue.

All the buttons are on, the stray threads snipped, the fabric was washed and dried before sewing, and even the elastic waist seam is closed. I think I'm going to make a gift bag for the dress, and then some bean bags with the left over fabric.

Finally hung up the scissor holder I got for Christmas. I love it. It makes things so much easier.

A little outfit. I don't know who it's for. I loved the fabric, and had just enough extra. The pattern is Butterick 3846. It took about 3 hours, 2 for the shirt, one for the pants. Or, it took Playing By Heart, plus Episode One, Season 4 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

I'm amazed that I actually hemmed it and put the elastic in and sewed up the elastic casing. I have a tendency to not finish them, thinking that I can't finish the waist because I don't know the exact size, but I just estimated and sewed. And so it's all done. And just needs for me to figure out who will wear it. It is size 18-24 pounds.

Here's one I made for my niece in June of 2005, I think it was the first thing I sewed for her. It fit her from 6 months to about 2 years.

Here is another one from that time. Amy Butler fabric, and eyelet lace on the cuffs. That's really just because I hate hemming. I couldn't find any eyelet for today's project.

I was on my way to the grocery store this morning to get lentils and split peas, and I didn't want any plastic bags. So, I quickly sewed up a couple of bags to put the beans in. This one is squarish, with the tie sewed on about 1/3 of the way down the back. Then you just roll the corners of the top in and down a few times, wrap the ties, and knot them.

I made a long skinny bag out of the blue and brown fabric, with a drawstring at the top, but a seam came loose while I was filling it with lentils, so that one had to come back home empty to have the seams reinforced.

Doll diapers, very small.

Minky whale. Very soft. Made from lavender and green scraps.

Bottom of whale.

Front of whale. Had trouble envisioning how the bottom piece would fit in. I knew it had to be shaped like a pointed oval, but I didn't quite see it until I was almost finished sewing and found myself with that triangle space, and no lavender to fill it.

ETA: The whale, if you turn it on its front end, looks like a penguin. And it is now, along with the diapers, on a plane to Tennessee.

This is a chocolate brown and dark red longies from Little Turtle Knits. I love the colors and the yarn is very soft. The short rows caused some issues, even after bringing it to the yarn store for help, but oh well.

Here's a little Duduza (comfort) doll for a charity knitting project at my local yarn store. He still needs arms and legs sewn in, and his smile looks a little sad. But I like him. I think I will make some more.

I used size 6 needles for the body and size 3 for the head. I think I knit it very tightly. The belt yarn was too skinny, I'll use something else next time.

Here it is with the i-cord added and the beginning of the Little Turtle Knits Pilot Cap.

It's a soaker from Punk Knitters. I might add cuffs. The legs holes are even, they just look funny in the picture, and it needs an i-cord. But it's pretty and will keep baby's entire torso warm (perhaps even it's arms if you tuck them inside.) Yarn is from Universal Yarn Inc.

The striped fabric will be the liner.
Sarah's bag. Gold will be the outside, red (more Alexander Henry) is inside. Hmm, must find more Alexander Henry. I didn't know I loved his fabric so much.

The fabric is wrinkled because I prewashed and dried it. Do you know what that means? Yes, it's true, I now get to iron 10 yards of fabric. Don't be jealous.

This is my new bureau from IKEA, with most of my fabric. Top drawer (not pictured) is notions and patterns and things, next drawer is cotton fabric for clothes, corduroy, some flannel. Bottom drawer is bag fabric (heavier material) which is currently hidden under the diaper fabric: more flannel, terry, hemp jersey, more jersey, some PUL. The fleece is in the closet with a bag full of random fabric that is on its way out the door.

I'm back sewing! These are Amy Butler Nappy Bags. The Blue and Brown one is for Krista, if I can manage to mail it (I really love it) and the other one is mine. There are 2 more in progress for Lila and Sarah.
They are a nice big bag, and work for groceries and running errands, too. Mine has pockets that go all the way to the bottom, which I realized is sort of annoying if there is a lot of stuff in the bag, so for K's and future bags, I made the pockets shorter, and added a small pocket for a cell phone. Future bags will I think have a little hook for keys, maybe.

An easy quick knit, 35 stitches cast on, knit for 5 inches. Then reduce every other row - k5, k2tog; k4, k2tog; k3, k2tog; k2, k2tog; k1, k2tog; k2tog across. Draw yarn through remaining stitches and tie off, then stitch down seam.

Yarn: Limari by Araucania. Merino wool/alpaca/silk. Needles: 15.

It also has instructions for a flower, which I knit, but I think I like it unadorned better.

It's a nice soft hat.

Pattern was from Felted Knits by Beverly Galeskas. Yarn was Universal Yarn Inc., Deluxe Worsted LP 100% Wool. Needles were 10 1/2. Felted in 12 minutes of hot water agitation in washer.

Thanks to jury duty this morning, I finished this hat (the Wizard's Cap from Kids Knitting, adult sized), which has been, hmm, how shall I put it.... a learning experience....and by learning I mean "mother" and by experience I mean "fu... never mind.
Anyway, it's finally done, and now that I realize the importance of casting on the correct number of stitches, and paying attention to words like "other" especially when they come after words like "every", I may make another which would hopefully take less than 3 months. Here it is, and me in it.

I learned, on this project about ribbing, decreasing, knitting back and forth on circulars, putting stitches on a holder and carrying on knitting, and the kitchener stitch (with help from knittinghelp.com)
I also learned that I like to knit with wool yarn.

Knitting Case

Here is the case I made for my knitting needles, patterns, and accessories. I used clear plastic for the front pockets, 3 flat pockets, one large pocket with pleats and a flap.
The entire thing is 2 layers of fabric, 45" home dec from Joann. The bottom fabric is attached in 2 layers, the back one with slots for the needles, and the front one plain so I could sew on the pockets. Then I brought the front layer up and topstitched up the sides, and along the top of the needle slots.
It still needs a closure. I think I'm going to try to find a ribbon.

Outer is 97% cotton, 3% spandex. Inner is 2 body layers of french stretch terry, and a hidden soaker of 2 layers of french terry. Soaker is 3 layers french terry, 2 layers black jersey. My first PUL cover with FOE

Here is my first attempt at a cover made from PUL (coated waterproof fabric) and FOE (fold over elastic.) The red is PUL, the pretty is Amy Butler. The pattern is the Very Baby Snug Wrap, size medium, which is clearly too big. But I added a crossover tab to hopefully that will help it fit.

Wool cover with casing, a new challenge

Well, I tried to make this out of some lovely thick wool I have, with a casing made out of an old sweater. It's not pretty, but it will probably work. I have more wool, so I'll keep trying to get the casing right. It needs some sort of fastener, but I'm out of Aplix for a few days.

Diapers from Maternity Pants

These diapers, a newborn Mamabird pattern, and a medium ottobre were both made from Lila's maternity pants. 97% cotton, 3% spandex. The inner layer is a thick embroidered terry, with loops only on one side. Both have an extra layer of the terry sewn in the center, inside.

I made this last winter out of a felted red wool sweater, and the collar of a felted, cabled sweater. It looks weird but it kept the little one warm and dry all winter. Can be worn with collar/waistband up or down.

Fleece outer, terry and 2 layers of birds eye inside. Used with soaker from shoe diaper. Actually worked (when used with Nicky cover) and didn't leak! Its own soaker is 4 layers of terry and a few of birds eye.

Wool Soaker

Well, the diapers are still a work in progress in terms of getting them to absorb. So in the meantime I made a wool soaker out of a sweater (aka a butt sweater, or a bum sweater). The sweater was 100% lambswool from Scotland, by way of the Salvation Army. I washed it in hot water and dried it in the drier. One adult sweater will yield 2 soakers and 1 pair of longies (long legged wool pants/soaker).
I ironed on her initials to the second soaker. There is no faded circle on it, the photo just appears that way.

Shoe Diaper

Smaller sized Ottobre. 2 layers birds-eye, one layer flannel for less bulk and quicker drying. Soaker is 8 layers birds-eye, 1 layer flannel. Top stitching on upper front. Front loop tape still needs to be applied.

My first attempt at sewing a diaper. Diaper is constructed of the following four (4) layers: flannel, birds-eye diaper flannel, terry, birds-eye. Not sure what size baby it fits yet, but I put it on a 17" bear to show the scale. Probably need to rethink placement of pink tag.
